Rebuilding Blount Island’s wharves would cost $30.88 million if JaxPort hires Superior Construction

A Jacksonville Port Authority committee today recommended approval of a $30.88 million contract to Superior Construction Co. for rebuilding a busy section of wharves at the Blount Island terminal.

The awards committee’s recommendation goes next to the JaxPort board at its Oct. 3 meeting.

Construction could start in November and take place over a thee-year period. The work would occur in six phases so only one segment at a time is out of operation for cargo ships.

A year ago, an underwater inspections found signs of deterioration in the wharves, which were built in the 1960s and 1970s. Ships have been able to dock at the wharves but JaxPort has placed restrictions on where ships can place heavy cargo while it’s loaded and unloaded.

Superior Construction has offices in Jacksonville and Indiana.
