Ferguson Enterprises opens downtown showroom

Posted by Bailey Archdall | No Comments »

Almost a year ago, Have You Heard? reported that Ferguson Enterprises would open a new Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery downtown.

Tuesday, it finally happened.

Showroom manager Shelley Beardslee says its amazing being in the new space at 1210 E. Douglas, which is two blocks east of Douglas and Washington.

This has been really hard work, she says of preparing the building while still running the business. The whole company has done a great job of working together and making this happen.

General manager Jeremy Zellers calls it a destination showroom. Beardslee says its central location means easy access for the entire city, and she says its a much more visible location than the old showroom at 2222 W. Harry.

People can actually figure out where we are down here.

Bank of America begins mailing offers to reduce customers’ mortgages

Posted by Bailey Archdall | No Comments »

Bank of America said Tuesday that more than 200,000 mortgage customers nationwide may be eligible to get their payment slashed by one-third as part of the bank’s settlement this year with federal and state authorities over allegations of foreclosure abuse.

The bank has started sending letters this week to people who could qualify to get part of their principal forgiven. People who are granted reductions should save an average of 30 percent on their monthly payments, the bank said. Most people should receive their letters by this fall.

Bank of America, along with Ally Financial, JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup and Wells Fargo, agreed in February to a $25 billion settlement with state and federal regulators following a 11/2-year-long investigation into foreclosure abuse by many of the nation’s largest banks.

Tampa, Wells Fargo, battle over finances

Posted by Bailey Archdall | No Comments »

The mayor of Tampa, Fla., said in court he was hard pressed to recall a contract he signed that allowed Wachovia Bank to take larger risks with city funds.

Former Mayor Rick Baker, although a former corporate attorney, said he delegated many of the city’s financial decisions to staff members or simply allowed financial managers at Wachovia Global Securities to oversee the city’s $400 million investment portfolio, the Tampa Bay Times of St. Petersburg, Fla., reported Saturday.

The city is suing Wells Fargo & Co., which bought Wachovia in the wake of the financial crisis. At issue is how much in advance city officials were aware that investment firm Lehman Brothers was about to collapse.

The city contends that Wachovia did not warn them that Lehman Brothers was going bankrupt.

Wichita State’s Dean Headley: the man behind the airline rankings

Posted by Bailey Archdall | No Comments »

The first time AirTran Airways wound up first in an airline quality ratings report co-authored by Wichita State Universitys Dean Headley, the carrier reacted in a big way.

It hung a huge banner at every AirTran gate in the country touting the ranking.

Employees briefly stopped operations to walk out on the tarmac in Atlanta to salute one another.

The report, now in its 22nd year, gets plenty of national attention.

Its featured by Good Morning America, CNN, the Today show, C-Span, USA Today, the Associated Press, the Wall Street Journal and other national and international news outlets reaching an audience of roughly 75million people every year.

Between 50,000 and 60,000 people view the 60-page report online.

Im proud to be known for getting this exposure for the university, Headley said. I think it carries as much weight as a published refereed article in an academic journal.

Federal grant to help laid-off Idaho workers

Posted by Bailey Archdall | No Comments »

BOISE — The U.S. Department of Labor has given the Idaho Department of Labor a grant of more than $1.04 million to help roughly 175 workers recently laid off from the Idaho National Laboratory.

Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis said in a prepared statement that the workers have specialized skills that don’t translate easily to new employers. The money will go to help those workers better market their current skills and learn new skills for other industries in the region, including hospitality, education, health care, and scientific and technical services.

The workers were all laid off from the INL contractors Battelle Energy Alliance, Bechtel BWXT Idaho and CH2N WG Idaho earlier this year.
