EVANSVILLE — Richard Deer, an engineer, entrepreneur and University of Evansville alumnus, has been named director of UE’s new Center for Innovation Engineering.

The program is part of UE’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, and university of officials say it aims to instill an entrepreneurial mindset in engineering students.

Deer has founded and operated a number of small businesses over the past 25 years. He most recently led a group of technology infrastructure companies in the Southwest, according to UE.

He has collaborated in product design and development with partners in Qatar, Czech Republic, India, and South Korea as well as the United States.

“I look forward to adding value gained from my experience in a number of private ventures to an already robust and feature-rich educational experience here at UE,” Deer said.

Deer graduated from UE in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Management. In 2008, he completed the University’s Executive Master of Business Administration program.

The Center for Innovation Engineering will seek to develop engineers who explore commercial opportunities, have a high level of technical expertise and address societal needs, UE officials say.

The center’s focal point will be the Summer Innovation Incubator Program, planned to launch in 2012. It will bring together faculty, industry leaders, students and others to develop marketable solutions to meet engineering needs in the community.

UE is among 18 universities that participate in the Kern Entrepreneurship Education Network, an initiative to increase the quantity and quality of U.S. engineering talent, and UE officials said the Kern Family Foundation is a supporter of UE’s new Center for Innovation Engineering.
