Seeking a career in the oil industry is tough. Even though many oil companies have the finances and resources to employ hundreds of people, the political situation, price of oil per barrel, and world’s supply and demand determine whether or not an oil company is hiring. If you are considering breaking into the oil industry, it is important to educate yourself on exactly what the companies look for so you can prepare for when a specific company, like bakken oil companies are hiring. The following are some standard hiring guidelines used by many oil companies in the United States.
Age Restrictions
Unlike some industries that allow companies to employ people who are of minimum working age, the oil industry requires that you be at least 18 or 21. This age restriction is put into place because of the dangerous nature of a career in the oil industry.
Hold a Valid Driver’s License
Many of the positions that the oil industry is looking to fill require that you hold a valid driver’s license. You will also be required to have a clean driving record that is free of any moving violations or DUIs. If you are applying for a position that is in another state then you will be required to obtain a valid driver’s license for the state the position is located in before you can be hired. The process for obtaining a new driver’s license will vary depending upon the state but can involve filling out paperwork or having to retake the entire driving test.
Ability to Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License
Oil companies may not require that you hold a valid commercial driver’s license, but they will require you to obtain one upon being hired. Most companies will give you anywhere from 30 days to six months from the date that you are hired to obtain a commercial driver’s license.

Allow Background Check
Oil companies, like many companies in the United States, require that a background check on all future employees be run. Companies want to employ clean, honest and trustworthy people, and a background check is just one way to determine this. When a background check is being run, companies will look for any prior felony convictions, theft or embezzlement. Applying for a position that you are unqualified for, or don’t meet the requirements can make it feel as if you are wasting your time and energy. Understanding the requirements for employment that many oil companies set forth will help you save time and energy if you are looking to pursue a career in this industry.
