Pasha building second ship to serve Hawaii

Pasha Hawaii announced Tuesday that it will build a second ship and add it to its Hawaii service, allowing the company to provide weekly service between the West Coast and the Islands.

The announcement came on the same day that Pasha began its interisland cargo service. Pasha currently offers twice-a-month service between Honolulu and Kahului on Maui and Hilo on the Big Island.

George Pasha IV said the new vessel won’t be available until the fall of 2013, and will not be used for the interisland service. He said his company’s state Public Utilities Commission interim license only covers Pasha’s existing vessel, the Jean Anne.

But Pasha said he will consider seeking PUC approval to add the new vessel to the interisland market when the ship is ready to sail.

The new ship is estimated to cost $144 million and will be built by VT Halter Marine of Pascagoula, Miss. Pasha has an option with VT Halter to build a third vessel with a base price of $137 million.

Pasha’s 579-foot Jean Anne has been servicing the Islands since March 2005. George Pasha said the new vessel will be similar in size and capability to the Jean Anne. Like the Jean Anne, the new ship will be too large to service the smaller Hawaii ports at Molokai and Lanai, Pasha said. …
