Keep Your Small Business Running in a Difficult Economy

If you have a small business that you’d like to keep going, or you have a business you’d like to start even while it seems that the economy itself isn’t looking up, what can you do? And what should you try that may take you out of your comfort zone?

According to experts, and there are many speaking up about what folks are doing differently today when it comes to earning a living, now is the time to start that new business. Yes, even when you may be looking for a full-time position somewhere else. Like that box of chocolates, you won’t know what is really out there unless you consider all the possibilities; including entrepreneurship.

  • Much is said about social networking today: why it works, why you should do it, where the best places are to get the word out there about your business. The most important thing about social networking, however, is that you keep it focused and plan out your next networking strategy. This isn’t the time to get on every social networking site available, but it is the time to do some research and discover what sites will work the best for the product or service you are selling.
  • Get some inexpensive business cards. Postcards are great, too. The extra space allows you to include more information about your business. Postcards may then be mailed cheaply to current customers with a sale or promotion listed on the back.
  • Find some temporary help through a job service such as Adecco USA temporary staffing services. Instead of hiring full-time or even part-time, get the help you need for only as long as you need it.
  • Keep talking: when you’re at lunch, when you attend a meeting, when you’re at the grocery store. If the occasion opens itself up to your business, say something. Most people won’t mind and you may be able to hand over a business card or postcard and ask for the other person’s card in return.

  • Don’t do anything in-house if you can farm it out for cheaper, or if you have the skills to do it yourself. Free templates are located online so that you can put together a flyer that looks professional. All you add is the text.
  • Get free or less expensive help from a recent grad or soon-to-be college graduate. Often, students need to earn some school credit and/or experience in the particular field of their choice. Help them out and yourself too.
  • Bring your small business home if you haven’t already done so. Using your home office will save you rent overhead plus the cost of utilities and driving to and from your business site.

Keeping your business running in a difficult economy doesn’t have to cause you stress or great difficulty. In fact, it will be a learning curve in which you discover something in yourself that you never thought existed — grit — and a determination to make your life work no matter where it takes you.
