Don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of MaddenCo.
The Evansville-based company specializes in point-of-sale and accounting software for tire dealers and truck stop service centers — not exactly high-profile activities, unless you work in that industry.
“We’re very much a niche,” said MaddenCo’s president, Jay Adams.
But the company may become better known now that’s it’s been named to Indiana’s “Companies to Watch” list.
The program, now in its fourth year, recognizes privately-held companies based in Indiana that have moved beyond the start-up phase and are poised for growth. To be eligible, companies must have between six and 150 full-time employees and between $750,000 and $100 million in annual revenue or capital.
“They’re ones that we’ll probably be hearing a lot more from,” said Katelyn Hancock, spokeswoman for the Indiana Economic Development Corp., which unveiled the list this week.
In all, 43 companies from 18 counties made it onto this year’s list. A panel of judges selected the winners from more than 300 nominations.
MaddenCo was founded in the 1970s by the late Greg Madden. Though Madden died in 2008, his family still owns the company, Adams said.
The company has 20 employees at its Evansville headquarters, and its software is used by some 1,700 customers in the U.S. and Canada.
Aside from MaddenCo, other local companies named to the list were Princeton-based Onsite Occupational Health & Safety and Loogootee-based STIMULUS Engineering.
Onsite specializes in on-site medical care and has been involved in projects on six continents including with U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, the World Trade Center Recovery Project and Haiti earthquake and Hurricane Katrina response.
STIMULUS Engineering provides engineering services for the defense, security, energy and advanced outdoors markets.
Companies to Watch winners will be honored Aug. 25 at a dinner at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis.
