Babcock & Wilcox expects to add several new hourly positions at its Mount Vernon, Ind. plant to help the company fulfill a big military contract.
Based in Charlotte, N.C., Babcock & Wilcox has a total of 12,000 employees who work at facilities worldwide, including a plant in Mount Vernon.
The company announced Thursday that its subsidiary, Babcock & Wilcox Nuclear Operations Group, has been awarded a $2 billion contract to make nuclear components for U.S. defense programs. Those components include nuclear power systems for U.S. Navy submarines and aircraft carriers.
The contract work will be performed over a 10-year period that begins this month.
Company spokeswoman Carla Parks Wooley said the Mount Vernon plant will handle some of this contract work, and as a result it will add about five to 10 new jobs starting this year. Most of those will be hourly positions.
