KING OF PRUSSIA — Simon Property Group Inc. , which manages King of Prussia Mall, recently announced the installation of four electric vehicle charging stations at the mall. The devices allow drivers to ‘pull up and plug in’ while shopping.
The self-serve charging stations, installed at no cost to the mall by The National Electrical Contractors Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union #380, have the capability to ‘top off’ or partially charge a customer’s electric vehicle in a 60- to 120-minute time frame. The charging stations were partially funded by Pennsylvania De
partment of Environmental Protection.
“We are pleased to offer shoppers access to convenient charging stations, while continuing our commitment to sustainability,” said King of Prussia Mall general manager Robert Hart. “Those with electric cars can now visit King of Prussia Mall and shop with ease, while reducing their carbon footprint, confident their cars will be recharged for the return home.”
King of Prussia Mall worked with 350Green , a leading EV charging service provider, for the roll out of the machines, which were unveiled Oct. 14. Charging is free during an introductory time period, after which 350Green will establish pricing options.
Shoppers have access to two “Level 2″ chargers at 208/240 volts, standard to all electric cars, located in the Upper Level Parking Deck of the Plaza in front of Nordstrom. Two additional units will be installed later this fall on the Upper Level Deck of the Court, near Bloomingdale’s.
“King of Prussia Mall is the newest addition to the statewide network of charging stations we have under development,” said Mariana Gerzanych, CEO of 350Green. “Thanks to Simon Property Group, these convenient stations will help create the infrastructure necessary to ensure the stability of the EV market.”
The EV chargers are the latest in King of Prussia Mall’s green initiatives. In the first six months of 2011, the mall reduced electric consumption by 3 million kilowatt-hours through the installation of energy efficient lighting and other energy conservation projects. Additionally, 4.1 million pounds of paper, plastic, glass and aluminum are recycled annually at the center; and an electric Gem Car, operating on a 72-volt battery system, is used by Public Safety to patrol the three million square-foot property.
