UPDATE: Arkansas Senate Advances Redistricting Proposal

LITTLE ROCK – A Senate panel has advanced a compromise proposal to redraw Arkansas’ congressional districts after a House-backed proposal stalled.

The Senate State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee approved the proposal after lawmakers from both parties spent most of Tuesday negotiating on the legislation.

The bill is expected to head to the full Senate for a vote Wednesday morning.

Unlike a measure backed by the House, the latest redistricting proposal would not move the city of Fayetteville into the 4th Congressional District. It would only split up two counties between congressional districts.

The Senate panel rejected the House-backed proposal on Monday. It faced heavy opposition from Republicans who said it was aimed primarily at helping Democrats.
