Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said tests have revealed contamination in three private water wells following an April blowout at a Pennsylvania natural gas drilling site operated by Chesapeake Energy Corp. , the Associated Press reported Friday.
EPA spokesman Roy Seneca said the agency took water samples from seven private wells near Chesapeake’s drilling site in Bradford County, in the northeastern part of the state.
Agency officials briefed residents on the sampling results Thursday. Seneca declined to reveal the nature of the contamination. The EPA will sample the wells again in July, he told the AP.
In the April 19 blowout in Leroy Township, Pa., thousands of gallons of salty, chemical-laced water spilled into fields and a stream, and nearby residents were forced to evacuate after part of a wellhead valve failed.
