Detroit Medical Center and Vanguard Health Systems leaders Friday celebrated the raising of the final steel beam on its pediatric specialty center, which is under construction and is scheduled to open next spring.

The $43.45 million Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center is going up across the street from Children’s Hospital. The five-story, 106,500-square-foot specialty center should open for patients in May, said Dr. Herman Gray, president of Children’s Hospital.

Hospital employees, physicians, patients and their families wrote messages on the beam, and an evergreen tree, which will be planted on the center’s grounds, was atop the beam as it was raised into place on the top floor.

“This living tree symbolizes the next phase of our growth at Children’s Hospital and our ability to provide the best possible health care,” Gray said.

DMC President and CEO Mike Duggan said the site will offer families more convenient doctor visits.

“What you see today is just the first manifestation of a very significant capital commitment that’s been made on behalf of the DMC,” Vanguard CEO Charlie Martin said. “Obviously, some of the projects will take a while so this won’t be our last beam signing. We have a least a half dozen major projects that will be under way shortly, if they aren’t already.”
